Building work has begun on a new prison in Wellingborough.

A ground-breaking ceremony for the £250 million facility has taken place with the Secretary of State for Justice Robert Buckland QC and Prisons Minister Lucy Fraser, the MP for South East Cambridgeshire.

It's being constructed on the site of the former Wellingborough prison and will house more than 1,500 offenders.

It will create jobs and training for 1,000 people.

"What's going to happen at Wellingborough is going to be very much the blueprint for future prison design. I'm looking forward to more prisons being built across the country following on from here at Wellingborough. They'll be modern, efficient buildings that will house our population and give prisoners an opportunity to choose the path of rehabilitation which the public would demand of them if we are to reduce reoffending and make our streets safer."
