Man from Essex jailed for attacking police with petrol

  • Footage: Essex Police

28-year-old Justin Jackson has been sent to prison after throwing petrol over eight police officers in Basildon.

Two officers were left hospitalised back in May after digesting the noxious liquid. Six others were treated by emergency partners at the scene for burns and petrol in their eyes.

They were attacked from behind while they were arresting a teenage motorcyclist. Jackson ran up to the police officers armed with a red watering can full of petrol before covering them with the substance.

Jackson has been sentenced to three years and nine months.

Superintendent Jonathan Baldwin, who was one of the eight victims that day, said:

"I know when I speak on behalf of the other seven officers who found themselves being doused in petrol by Jackson that it will stay with us for a long time.

"It's not the physical effects of feeling the burning on your arm, the stinging in your eyes - that all passes fairly quickly - it's the fact now that every time I attend an operational incident there is the thought in the back of my mind that takes me back to that moment when somebody shouted "petrol, petrol, petrol!"
