Flood warnings on border of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire

Several of the flood alerts affect the channel between the Old Bedford River and Hundred Foot Drain Credit: Environment Agency

Several flood alerts have been issued for low-lying roads in the Fens.

The Environment Agency said that the Sutton Gault Causeway - near Ely - was covered by 4cm of water early on the morning of Wednesday, 13 November.

The road sits between the Old Bedford River and Hundred Foot Drain, in a channel where three flood alerts are in place.

Meanwhile a flood warning - which is more serious - was issued for a stretch of the River Nene near Whittlesey.

The warning said: "During periods of high tide the river will be unable to discharge into the sea, resulting in tide lock conditions.

"This is likely to lead to localised flooding at North Bank Road."

The alerts have been triggered by heavy rainfall in the past week.
