'It is costing Ipswich dear': business community's anger at bridge closures

Business groups have spoken of their frustration at the repeated closures of the Orwell Bridge in Ipswich.

The bridge, which carries the A14, was shut on Monday and Tuesday nights due to high winds.

WATCH: ITV Anglia's Tanya Mercer reports on the reaction to the repeated closures.

The closures cause long delays on diversionary routes through Ipswich, especially as lorries from the Port of Felixstowe are forced onto single-carriageway routes through the town.

A Highways England report into how best to mitigate the effect of the closures is underway; it is understood that will be published by the end of this month.

WATCH: Ipswich MP Tom Hunt gave his reaction, saying the town needs a "firm plan"

"We estimate that it's costing in the region of a million pounds of lost business every time the bridge is shut.

"That's in terms of productivity, employees not being able to get into work or having to leave early so they can get home before the bridge closes, and also just the general disruption.

"If you think about the number of times that this bridge is shut, it's costing Ipswich dear."
