A murder investigation has been launched in Northamptonshire after a pensioner died following an altercation between two dog walkers.
The 74-year-old man, named locally as Ralph Baxter, was assaulted in the village of Roade, just south of Northampton, at around 4.20pm on Wednesday afternoon.
Members of the public and paramedics tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr Baxter retired from his career in the civil service in 2007. He worked primarily in the Department for Work and Pensions, for which he was given an MBE in the June 2007 honours.
A 27-year-old man from Northampton has been arrested on suspicion ofmurder in connection with the incident, which took place between Hyde Road and Blisworth Road.
"At the present time and in order to preserve best evidence, we are treating this incident as a murder investigation," Detective Inspector Pete Long said.
"I am particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have witnessed an altercation between two dog walkers in the area of Hyde Road and Blisworth Road between 3.50pm and 4.20pm today."
Witnesses are asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101.
