Cameron feels the election heat in Corby steelworks

Voters don't even know when they're going to the polls yet but try telling the politicians that. It was the Prime Minister on the campaign trail in Northamptonshire today, visiting a steel plant in Corby.

t's the latest high profile visit in the run-up to the town's by-election, which has been called after Tory MP Louise Mensch decided to step down.

It's a crucial battleground seat with only 1,500 votes separating the Conservatives and Labour at the last election.

The result - when the election is finally called - will be critical to the leadership of both parties in a constituency where the MP has always been from the party which went onto form the government.

The Conservatives have chosen businesswoman Christine Emmett to contest the forthcoming Corby by-election.

The town's MP Louise Mensch is standing down and moving to America where her husband lives. She won the seat from Labour in 2010 with a majority of just under 2000.

Mrs Emmett lives at Morcott in Rutland where her husband runs a holiday homes business.

The former buyer for Marks and Spencer has also been a non-executive director of the Peterborough NHS Trust.
