British Athletics has finally ratified Greg Rutherford's new British long jump record - a month after the Milton Keynes athlete set it.

The 8.51m jump - at a meeting at Chula Vista in San Diego - had been disputed by his Great Britain teammate Chris Tomlinson, who claimed it was a foul.

Now British Athletics has confirmed the new record, which beats the previous best by 16cm.

That record had been jointly held by Rutherford and Tomlinson.

A statement from the body's technical advisory group said it had considered a number of factors in ratifying the decision including the wind speed card from the event, and the fact that the jump satisfied the USA Track and Field Rules.

The group also assessed a You Tube video which appeared to show Rutherford had overstepped the take-off board but dismissed it as evidence because it was not an official video and had not been taken directly in line with the take-off board.
