Amazon to hire Christmas staff in the East

Online retailer Amazon which has distribution centres in Milton Keynes, Peterborough and Hemel Hempstead has announced it is hiring more than 15,000 seasonal staff across the UK, to meet customer demand in the run-up to Christmas.

The US internet giant, which is expanding operations in this country, said it expected hundreds of the temporary staff would later be able to take up permanent jobs.

Catherine McDermott, director of operations at Amazon.co.uk. said: "On our busiest shopping day last Christmas, customers ordered a total of 3.5 million items during one 24-hour period at a rate of 44 items a second.

Elephants get 20 tonnes of snow to cool down

In this hot weather, I am sure you have been thinking of ways to cool down. Maybe you have been wearing shorts, eating ice cream, or turning on the air conditioning.

There are other ways though. At Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire the elephants have been chilling out... in the snow.

20 tonnes of it in fact after the herd's play paddock was transformed into a winter wonderland.

The Zoo says they are always looking for new ways to help their animals to stay cool in the summer. The snow came from The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.

Murder charge after Hemel Hempstead death

A man has been charged with murder after the body of a 63-year-old man was found in a burning bungalow in Hemel Hempstead.

Thomas Baird died of head and neck injuries and stab wounds to the chest. His body was discovered over the weekend after a fire at his home.

Thirty-year-old James Carbott from Epping Green in Hemel Hempstead has been charged with his murder.
