Steam gala - and Oliver Cromwell visit - postponed due to fire fears

A popular annual steam gala has been postponed because of safety fears following the recent dry spell.

The North Norfolk Railway, running between Sheringham and Holt, was due to host the event in a couple of weeks' time.

But organisers say the threat of line-side fires caused by sparks from the locomotives igniting the very dry fields surrounding the track remains too high.

"With the dry weather set to return through August and into September, we have had to make the difficult decision to reschedule the gala which usually takes place in September.

"With a number of areas of vulnerable landscape along the Sheringham to Holt route we feel that we have a duty of care and that it is of the utmost importance that we protect the delightful countryside and our neighbours' property that we run through."

– Andrew Munden, General Manager, North Norfolk Railway

The gala, which will include a visit from the National Railway Museum's Oliver Cromwell locomotive, will take place between October 12 and 14 instead.
