A pilot has died after a US Navy FA-18 fighter jet crashed in a field shortly after take off from RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. The aircraft was one of six heading back to base in California from Bahrain.

US Airforce launch investigation following fatal crash

An investigation is underway following an aircraft craft in Cambridgeshire, the US Airforce has confirmed.

A statement from 100th Air Refueling Wing said: "An incident involving a U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet, which departed from RAF Lakenheath, occurred at about 11 a.m. today near Littleport, United Kingdom.

"Response efforts are under way and the incident is currently under investigation.

"More information will be released as it becomes available."
