A £10 million centre dedicated to researching Artificial Intelligence will be launched by Stephen Hawking at Cambridge University today.

The official opening of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence will take place this evening.

It's a collaboration between the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College London and Berkeley. Together they will investigate the impact of the development of artificial intelligence, to ensure that 'AI' benefits all mankind.

"The rise of powerful AI will be either the best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity. We do not yet know which. The research done by this centre will be crucial to the future of civilisation and of our species."
