The city of Ely has been hosting a unique world sporting championship.

Competitors, including two pantomime characters have been taking part in the world's only street potato racing event.

Those taking part have to run carrying either a 20kg or 10kg bag of potatoes.

It's part of efforts to show the journey the potato makes from the field to the frier.

Last year the event raised around £2,000 for local schools and charities with hundreds of people lining the streets to watch the action.

"Basically it's an endurance event where people race from one end of the high street to the other with 20kg of potatoes. It is fun, but more and more over the years it has become very competitive. It's a celebration of the potato and it's the harvest festival here in Ely this weekend and it's to celebrate the crop of the potatoes, it's very important."
