A new spectator telephone number has been introduced for the first time following the deaths of three rally fans on the Jim Clark Rally last month.

Any spectators that have any safety concerns can dial the number which will put them straight through to rally headquarters in Dumfries.

'Our organising team have had a look at every aspect of the event in light of the Jim Clark accident and we've brought in a couple of new things that we want to try out this year. The first one is a rally safety line.'

'We're publicising the number to all spectators via notices and via the official programme and we hope that if spectators or anyone else sees something they are concerned about before the rally cars come through or while they're coming through they will phone this line which will bring them direct into rally headquarters in Dumfries. We will be able to speak to the start of the stage in question and make sure that officials are despatched to the scene to resolve the problem.'

Organisers have also introduced a couple of flying squad cars, manned by experienced officials who are able to attend the scene of any potential incident.

The spectator safety line telephone number is 07767446149.
