Call for new Lockerbie inquiry

Campaigners who believe Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was wrongly convicted of the Lockerbie bombing are calling for an independent prosecutor to re-examine the case.

Members of the Justice for Megrahi group were at Holyrood yesterday as their petition for a full public inquiry was discussed by the Justice Committee. MSPs decided to keep the petition open.

Police Scotland is currently investigating allegations the campaign group has made against Crown Office and forensic officials who worked on the Lockerbie case. These range from perverting the course of justice to perjury. A report is due at the end of the year.

The Crown Office says a Counsel, who has not been involved in the Lockerbie case, will be appointed to look at the findings.

But campaigners say they're concerned the report won't be handled fairly. They'll continue to push for the appointment of an independent prosecutor.

Dr Jim Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the 1988 attack, told ITV Border.

"We welcome the news that this petition has been kept open. It is now the most important thing we have as families in our search to find the truth about who murdered our children. It is about more than politics. It is a basic human right."
