Sheep rustling is one of the most common, and costly, examples of rural crime.

Appleby NFU has set up the Country Watch Eden scheme, to raise awareness of rural crime, and ensure better collaboration between farmers, the police and the wider community:

In our office - Appleby NFU, we have had 13 sheep thefts in the past year, with a total of around 350 sheep. We have also had six vehicles stolen, and a number of other small thefts."
