Since a lower drink driving limit came into force, Dumfries and Galloway has seen a considerably bigger reduction in offences than anywhere else in Scotland.

These figures from Police Scotland show the percentage decrease in drink driving offences in the nine months since the new limit was introduced:

56.4%
Reduction in drink-driving offences in Dumfries and Galloway
24%
Reduction in drink-driving offences in Fife, the second biggest reduction in the UK
12.5%
Reduction in drink-driving offences in Scotland overall
6.6%
Reduction in drink-driving offences in England, Wales and Northern Ireland

Local police have welcomed the news, but say they are still planning a drink-driving crackdown in the build up to Christmas

We will not rest on our laurels as we approach the festive period.

We know there will be many parties from now until after New Year and we'd urge all motorists to be sensible about their drinking.

They should consider how much they have had to drink the night before and ensure they have left themselves plenty of time before driving the next day.

Although we have seen a consider-able drop in those detected we have not yet eliminated the problem and we will work hard with our partners to get the message across."
