The beauty of the Lake District has inspired presidents, pop stars and poets to get hitched over the years. Here's five spots where Cupid's arrow might inspire a proposal.

  • Sharrow Bay Hotel - Ullswater

Love, Love Me Do. When Beatle Sir Paul McCartney decided to drop to one knee to pop the question to Heather Mills, he chose Pooley Bridge as the perfect location.

After a lunch at the Sharrow Bay Hotel, Sir Paul whipped out a sapphire and diamond engagement ring bought in India.

The multi-millionaire already had a lot going for him, but the stunning views across Ullswater must surely have helped Heather reply with a resounding "Yes!"

Heather, who had been enjoying a Lake District walking holiday with McCartney, said at the time: 'It just all happened all of a sudden. My brother and sister were very pleased. It was very romantic. I am in shock but I am really happy."

  • Windermere

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman enjoyed a romantic trip to Windermere in the early years of their marriage, while David and Victoria Beckham have been more recent visitors to one of the most popular locations in Cumbria.

While the magic of the Lakes didn't quiet work for Tom and Nicole, it certainly seems to have cast a lasting spell over Mr and Mrs Posh.

  • Grasmere

William Wordsworth may have wandered lonely as a cloud, but surely with a palette of colours like this Grasmere is a place best enjoyed by two?

Wordsworth's home Dove Cottage sits in this pretty location, and it's where he spent his days with wife Mary Hutchinson. Famous for its daffodils, and a blooming romance.

  • Buttermere

When boyband heart-throb Harry Styles was courting American pop princess Taylor Swift, there was only one direction in which to head - Buttermere.

The pair were spotted at various locations around the Lakes, including beautiful Buttermere. Sadly, it didn't quite work out for the pair - Taylor just wasn't Harry's style.

  • Coniston

Bill and Hillary aren't the only First Couple to visit the Lake District. Barack and Michelle Obama have also spent time walking to shores of the various lakes, including Coniston.

Perhaps they'll be back in a few months time?
