Treasure hunters hamper Carlisle flood repairs

Work to repair a flood damaged sports ground is being hampered by treasure hunters digging for Victorian artefacts.

Carlisle City Council has been forced to put up security fencing at the Sheepmount Athletics Stadium to stop people digging. Council bosses say that as well as delaying repairs trespassers are putting themselves at risk.

Holes have been dug on a stretch of the Hadrian's Wall Path running alongside the River Eden in a bid to unearth items including old bottles and porcelain pots.

In Victorian times glass and pottery was used as landfill to raise the river banks to protect the area from flooding.
