Carlisle Racecourse is renaming its opening meet Red Rum day, on the 40th anniversary of the famous horse's last Carlisle victory.

The nation's favourite steeplechaser famously prepared for each of his National wins by taking victory at the Cumbrian racecourse in the months before the big race.

He claimed his three Grand National titles in 1973, 1974 and 1977.

Red Rum's last victory in Carlisle was in 1976 and patrons attending today's meet, born in that year, will be given free entry.
