Copeland MP Trudy Harrison has welcomed the call for a General Election less than two months after she was elected to parliament.

Mrs Harrison won the west Cumbrian seat, which had been in Labour hands since the 1930s, at a by-election in February.

"I welcome Theresa May’s statement today, since her election she has shown herself to be a strong and stable leader who puts the national interest first.

"As the Prime Minister said, the decision to call a General Election has been taken to lead Britain through the next five years and give the country the certainty and stability we all need, not just up to the point at which we leave the European Union but beyond it."
