Melrose Rugby Club have won the BT Cup final, beating Ayr in the final at Murrayfield.

It was an historic victory, for an historic club, at an historic stadium.

As the home of Rugby Sevens, Melrose is known throughout the world as a rugby heartland, and the town's union team beat Ayr 23-18 is a close encounter this afternoon.

Ayr beat Melrose in the premiership play-off final last weekend, and they got off to the perfect start, Danny McCluskey crossing the line in the opening minute.

But Melrose hit back, with a try from Bhatti getting them level.

The teams went into half time with eight points each, and in the second half it was Ayr who once again pulled ahead.

A penalty and a converted Will Bordill try put them 18-11 in front, but Melrose hit back, with a converted try from George Taylor levelling the score.

With all to play for in the final ten minutes, it was Nyle Godsmark who crossed the line, leading Melrose to a hard-fought 23-18 victory.
