A busy stretch of road in Carlisle has been closed, while the emergency services tackle a fire.

The blaze took hold at the building which was used as the city's Ukrainian Club for more than 50 years.

The club was closed recently, and no one was inside the building during the fire.

The part of Wigton Road from the junction of Stanhope Road to Caldewgate was shut when the emergency services arrived at the scene.

More than 20 firefighters from Carlisle, Penrith, Longtown and Wigton attended, with four fire engines.

They brought the blaze under control, but not before it had caused serious damage to the building's roof.

The cause of the fire is not known.

One eyewitness described the scene to ITV Border.

I smelt quite a bit of smoke and out of the bedroom window I opened the curtains and it was just pure white, as if a very thick fog. So I came to the top of the street and that's when I realised what had happened and that's when the fire brigade started coming up.
