New parents in Scotland to receive baby boxes

The box includes around 40 items Photo: Scottish Government

From next week all new parents in Scotland will get a baby box that has a variety of essential items for new born babies.

The Scottish Government initiative has been inspired by a similar scheme in Finland.

The baby box includes around 40 items and the box itself can be made into a cot.

It is forecast to cost more than £35m in the first four years.

Conservatives have criticised the way the scheme has been rolled out:

I think what a lot of people are growingly finding frustrating is some idea that this is a gift from the SNP, whereas this is a proposal and a policy that has been funded by tax payers across Scotland and we've got to know that the contents of the boxes are going to make a difference to young people and families here in Scotland."
