Scottish Secretary David Mundell is to meet with key figures as efforts to save the closure-threatened Pinneys seafood factory continue.

Young's Seafood has announced plans to shut down the site in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, putting 450 jobs at risk.

Mr Mundell will meet with Young's chief executive Bill Showalter to urge him to reconsider the move, and with Dumfries and Galloway Council chief executive Gavin Stevenson to discuss potential UK Government support.

Mr Mundell said:

The loss of so many jobs would be a tragedy for Annan, as well as the wider Dumfries and Galloway area.

The workforce - and indeed the whole community - have made tremendous efforts to fight the closure and keep the issue at the top of the agenda.

I am absolutely determined to do everything possible to support them to keep the factory operating."

Business minister Paul Wheelhouse told MSPs on Tuesday that several parties have expressed an interest in Pinneys.

SNP MSP Joan McAlpine said:

If there is a serious offer of assistance from the UK government, then I would of course welcome that - but we must see the detail.

The Scottish Government has been working tirelessly to help save Pinneys since the news was announced two weeks ago, and I hope that progress will be made soon."
