A Cumbrian teenager met The Duke and Duchess of Sussex while picking up a national bravery award.

Thirteen-year-old Poppy Slater from Whitehaven was named 'Inspirational Child' at the WellChild Awards ceremony held at London's Royal Lancaster Hotel.

Poppy has Panenteric Crohns Disease and has had to endure numerous hospital stays over the past seven years as well as taking an extensive list of medications that can have severe side effects including fatigue and joint pain.

"Poppy always thinks of others before herself. She is strong willed, compassionate and determined to make the most of her life. She knew nothing about her nomination but her nurse and hospital teacher brought the Award to my attention and urged me to nominate Poppy.

“We believe the award will show Poppy just how special she is in how she lives with her condition and perhaps give her even more confidence to act as a role model for other children who are suffering from what is an all too common condition.”
