A report calling for the urgent restoration of rail services to and from Stranraer is going before councillors in Dumfries this afternoon.
An exclusion zone placed around a crumbling hotel has affected Ayr station, meaning buses have replaced trains on the route, since August.
Dumfries and Galloway Council says the lack of trains is leaving south west Scotland isolated.
Inspections of the former Ayr Station Hotel has now deemed that the roof is in a more dangerous condition than had been anticipated.
South Scotland MSP, Colin Smyth, is calling on the Transport Secretary, Michael Matheson, to step in.
He says a temporary station should be opened to allow a reinstatement of some services while work continues at Ayr Station, with one option being the ScotRail depot off Carrick Road, just south of Ayr Station.
