North West MEP Paul Nuttall has resigned from the UK Independence Party.

He led UKIP briefly following its success in the Brexit referendum, and had been a member for 14 years.

In a statement published today he said the party had being taken in a direction he believes is harmful to the brexit process.

He'll remain as a North West member of the European Parliament, sitting as an independent.

I am resigning because the party is being taken in a direction which I believe is harmful to Brexit."
