Shoppers to beware of online fraudsters in final run up to Christmas

Online scams go up around the Christmas period Photo: PA

Police have urged consumers to stay safe online in the final run-up to Christmas.

Detectives in Cumbria say reports of people being defrauded out of cash or goods go up at this time of year.

In December last year 20 online frauds were reported in Cumbria.

The figure is a third higher than during the summer months.

And as more people than ever go online to buy presents, police say the need to know how to stay secure is more important than ever.

Police are issuing tips from officers and partner organisations such as Trading Standards and the Get Safe Online website, with the hope people will take in the advice and stay clear of crime.

These last few weeks before Christmas can be really busy and it can be easy to rush into making a quick purchase online. But we would like to remind shoppers to take extra care when shopping for gifts online and take the time to check everything is as it seems. Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is."
