A Workington man accused of murdering his mother has appeared in court.

Lee Sowerby, 45, faces one charge. This alleges the murder of 69-year-old mother Mary Annie Sowerby, who was known as Annie at Dearham, near Maryport, on January 22.

Cumbria Police said on Tuesday that officers had been called by the North West Ambulance Service at 10-15am that morning to an address in Main Street, Dearham.

"A woman aged 69 was treated at the address having suffered serious injuries but has subsequently died," said a police spokesman.

Sowerby, of Honister Drive, Workington, was arrested and charged with murder.

He made a brief appearance at North and West Cumbria Magistrates' Court in Carlisle this morning before District Judge Gerald Chalk for a hearing which lasted less than two minutes.

Sowerby was remanded in custody, and is due to appear before a judge at Carlisle Crown Court tomorrow.
