The Rugby League World Cup is coming to West Cumbria after Workington was announced as one of the host venues.

The town has been selected to stage three group matches of the 2021 tournament which gets underway on October 23 of that year.

Matches will take place at a new 8,000 capacity £15million stadium that's set to be built on the current Borough Park site and be shared by Workington Town and Workington Reds.

Building work hasn't yet started but the ground is expected to be completed by spring 2021.

"This was an incredibly tough process given the large number of interested parties and the impressive nature of their bids.

"With so many competitive bids, we're confident that our chosen hosts will help play a role in delivering the greatest, and most inclusive, Rugby League World Cup of all time."
