An emu is on the run after fleeing from an old people's home in Scotland.

The 4ft male bird was part of the home's menagerie and managed to get through a hole in a fence on 16 May.

There have been no sightings of the emu since it went missing from Burnfoot Care home in Dumfries.

Emus have long powerful legs and can run 35 miles per hour. If provoked, they can kick with their big three-toed feet.

The missing animal lives on the grounds of the home with four emus, five donkeys, 20 hens and 10 sheep.

The groundskeeper says the female has been left pining for the male.

If anyone sees the animal, the advise is to contact Police Scotland.
