Could Northern Rail be on the brink of collapse ?

Train operator Northern could be on the brink of collapse according to a trade union.

There has been some speculation that company is facing a financial crisis and is likely to follow Virgin East Coast.

The former company now known as London North Eastern Railway (LNER) ran out of money and was forced to hand over the franchise back to the government.

TSSA's general secretary has called for the Northern rail franchise to be taken back into public ownership and claims it's facing financial crisis.

The government must act now and put passengers first. By all accounts Northern is failing and therefore can't be allowed to stagger on for months causing yet ore misery for passengers.

A failing franchise won't only provide proper services, it's likely to overlook non urgent repairs and there is also the distinct possibly of overall safety being compromised. That is something this union will never allow.

– Manuel Cortes, TSSA General Secretary

We have seen much needed improvements in Northern services since last year, with industry expert Richard George driving forward a recovery plan focused on reliable services.

Alongside Transport for the North, who co-manage the franchise, our absolute priority is delivery the services that passengers expect.
