Carlisle Lake District Airport has closed its runway and diverted flights to Newcastle International Airport after flooding.

Heavy rainfall across Cumbria on Saturday left the runway under water, leading to flights being cancelled.

Customers are being advised to monitor the airport's social media channels for the latest updates.

A spokesperson from Carlisle District Airport said:

The airport has experienced expectational levels of rainfall and has closed its runway due to the resulting flooding, which is impacting Carlisle and the wider region.

“Flights are being diverted to Newcastle International Airport and the airport has immediately partnered with a local coach company, which is currently transporting affected passengers to Newcastle.

“The airport has also immediately deployed measures, including the sourcing of heavy duty water pumps, to become operational as soon as is feasibly possible.

“We advise customers to monitor the airport’s social media channels and Loganair’s website for the latest travel news. This is a developing situation and we hope to update customers further in due course.”
