Man charged in connection with knife and axe attack

A man has been charged in connection with a knife and axe attack in Workington.

Tony Joynes, of no fixed address, has been charged with two counts of wounding with intent and two counts of possession of a bladed article.

Officers were called to a house on Coniston Drive just before 1am on 21 August after reports of a serious assault.

A man and a woman, both in their 30s, were left with serious injuries and taken to the Cumberland Infirmary.

Mr Joynes has been remanded in custody ahead of his appearance at West Cumbria Magistrates’ Court.

Police say extra patrols will be taking place in Workington to reassure local people.
