A Hospice in Cumbria has announced it will stop accepting inpatients due to a shortage of specialist doctors.

The chief executive of St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston announced the temporary suspension as it no longer has the medical expertise needed.

The Hospice has been looking for a senior doctor in palliative care since May, but the role is still vacant.

The hospice will also enhance its Hospice at Home service during the 3 month suspension.

Today has been one of the most challenging days in the 30-year history of St Mary’s Hospice. Despite repeated attempts over a number of months we have been unable to fill specialist doctor vacancies or find sufficient cover.
