An investigation into a fire at a farmhouse that led to the death of a 69-year-old woman is expected to begin today.

Several fire crews from across the county were called to the property near Broughton in Furness just before 9am, on Wednesday morning, after a blaze broke out.

An elderly woman was killed and a man in his 70s, found outside of the property, was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Engineers are expected to assess the fire-damaged structure this morning to make sure it is safe for coroners to enter.

We are treating the fire as unexplained at this stage.

We are working closely with Cumbria Fire and Rescue investigators to establish the cause of the fire.
