A giant crane has started demolition work on a derelict hotel in Carlisle city centre.

Eight thousand tonnes of rubble is set to be removed from the site of the old Central Plaza which will mean 450 trips by HGVs to remove the rubble. This will then be taken to a recycling centre.

Demolition workers will try to to salvage the ornate carvings on the side of the building.

The council says this stage will take several weeks and is weather dependent.

Meanwhile, Victoria Viaduct remains closed to pedestrians and vehicles.

The work be completed as quickly and safely as possible. Contractors will continue to work over the Christmas period, except for Bank Holidays. We continue to support businesses and have put in place a hardship fund for businesses directly affected.
