A man who committed robbery at a Carlisle store taking £25,000 worth of jewellery and leaving the owner with a broken nose has had his jail sentence increased.

After stealing a car in Bolton, 33-year old Daniel Burtak targeted St Nicholas Galleries on Bank Street in June 2019.

It's was second time in two months that the jewellers in the centre of the city was robbed.

Burtak was handed eight years of jail time during his trial at Carlisle Crown Court in November, but on Tuesday the Court of Appeal increased this to 11 years’ imprisonment.

The sentence was referred as being 'unduly lenient' by the Attorney General.

  • CCTV footage was released during the trial which shows the moment Burtak attacks shop owner Craig Carruthers, leaving him with a broken nose.

After the hearing the Attorney General said: “Burtak is a callous robber who left many injured and shaken following his violent spree.

"A repeat offender, Burtak continued to commit offences despite being granted numerous second chances so it is right for his sentence to be increased.”
