Teenage girl assaulted in Cockermouth park

Police are investigating after a teenage girl was assaulted by a man in a Cockermouth park.

The 16-year-old was running in Harris Park at 8:30am this morning when a male assaulted her. She was uninjured.

The man is described as white, in his early twenties, average height, wearing a grey orblue puffy jacket, dark tracksuit bottoms and carrying a bag.

A 19-year-old man, from Carlisle, has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and remains in police custody.

Detective Inspector Martin Hodgson said, "Incidents such as this are extremely rare and I want to reassure the public that Cumbria Police are taking this extremely seriously and have allocated a team of detectives to thoroughly investigate what taken place.
