New leader for Scottish Borders Council

Mark Rowley has become the new leader of Scottish Borders Council.

His appointment was confirmed today at a meeting of the full council.

Cllr Rowley, 55, is a Conservative and a member for the Mid Berwickshire ward. He was first elected to the authority in 2017.

Originally from Edinburgh, he has lived in the Scottish Borders since 2003 and works in the hospitality industry.

He takes over the position vacated by Shona Haslam, who stood down earlier this month after more than four years in the post.

Cllr Rowley has previously been executive member for economic development and for finance at the authority. It is expected adjustments of roles an representation on outside bodies will be discussed at the next council meeting.

Cllr David Parker, the authority's convener, congratulated the new leader.
