Four major supermarket chains have agreed to have Foodbank collection points in their stores in Allerdale.
As part of the council's support for initiatives to reduce poverty, they joined forces with North Lakes Foodbank and four supermarkets to increase Foodbank collection points.
Jessie Hendry, Project Co-ordinator, The North Lakes Foodbank, explained that as they expand through the county it is vital they collect enough food to meet demand which has increased by over 600% over the last 18 months. She added:
The North Lakes Foodbank is a community-based project providing food for people in crisis throughout Allerdale and Copeland. They are currently feeding over 240 people in crisis a month, meaning more than 1.5 tonnes of food is needed every month.
