A man claims to have found a cheaper way to heat his home. Darrel Piper from Dumfries says using Christmas lights is less expensive than his central heating. Hannah McNulty reports.
A man from Dumfries is using thousands of Christmas lights to heat his home.
Darrel Piper claims it is cheaper for him to use the lights for heat rather than paying for gas.
The 40-year-old says that he puts £30 in the electricity meter every fortnight and £5 in the gas meter to use for cooking.
He says that if he didn't have the lights it would cost £60 a fortnight for the gas and electricity.
Darrel buys most of his decorations second hand and some are decades old.
He says that he never goes out and leaves the lights on.
Other homeowners are being advised not to follow in his footsteps.
