A van has caught fire in lane three of the A74M, half of a mile north of junction 20.
Police and fire services are at the scene and police are asking people to slow down when approaching the incident and to watch the road ahead when passing.
An update has confirmed lane one of three is now open with traffic able to pass the scene.
Police have been dealing with a serious road traffic accident which closed the southbound lane of the A74M Glasgow.
Two men were freed from their car near Kirtlebridge about three miles south of Ecclefechan, midway between Lockerbieand Gretna.
Emergency services were called to the accident on the southbound carriageway around 4.30pm, Wednesday 26 July. All lanes restricted Southbound have now been cleared.
One man was taken by ambulance to hospital and the other man was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. The car, which is believed to have been involved in an accident with a lorry, came off the motorway and ended up the embankment.
A full accident investigation is being carried into the incident and Police Scotland are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
