Cumbrian badminton star named in Commonwealth Games team

Lauren Smith, from Carlisle, has been chosen to compete in the Commonwealth Games this coming April, in Australia’s Gold Coast.

Team England today named a full complement of ten badminton players to represent the nation.

They will travel to Australia with royal backing, after members of the squad recently enjoyed a private invitation with HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, at Buckingham Palace.

Cumbrian badminton star Lauren Smith has won England's first European Championship Women's Doubles medal for seven years.

Smith and her partner, Sarah Walker, took the bronze medal in Denmark over the weekend.

On the way to the semi-final they stunned the number three seeds, but lost out to Bulgarians Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva in the semi final.

Lauren Smith, a rising star in the Badminton world, is in the final of the women's doubles at the National Badminton Championship in Manchester. The 21 year from Longtown is partnering Gabby White and the pair will face Heather Olver and Mariana Agathangelou in final later today.

Smith was named Cumbrian Sports Personality of the year last November, and is widely tipped to make the Commonwealth Games squad for Glasgow 2014.
