People caught fly-tipping in Cumbria could now be handed on the spot fines of up to £400.
Councils in England and Wales have been given the powers in a bid to stop fly-tippers dumping small scale items like broken furniture and mattresses.
A new campaign to tackle fly-tipping and littering in Carlisle's lanes and alleyways has been launched.
Carlisle City Council is cleaning up areas around London Road and is urging residents to report those dumping rubbish.
If the 'Neat Streets' scheme is successful it could be rolled out across the city.
