Lanes one and two of the M6 Southbound between Junction 36 and 35 will be closed today from 11am while police conduct investigations following a collision involving a pedestrian and a HGV.
The incident happened at 00.30am this morning. The female pedestrian was taken to hospital, but later died.
The HGV driver is currently helping police with their enquiries.
Diversions will be in place via the A590 and A6. Junction 36 to 35 will be closed for a number of hours until investigations are complete.

The M6 Southbound carriageway is now open following a crane fire on the hard shoulder of the northbound carriageway.
The M6 Northbound at J36 is still closed, but traffic is being cleared by one lane. Junctions 37 to 39 Northbound are now open.
The M6 Northbound carriageway at J36 is expected to be kept closed for several hours for recovery work. Diversions are in place.
Road works on the M6 Southbound are due to start on 24 June, causing some disruption to motorists.
A pavement maintenance scheme will begin at 8pm and finish at around 6am the following morning.
There will be lane closures, and a 50mph temporary speed limit.
The Junction 44 Southbound Entry Slip Road will be closed, and traffic looking to travel south on the M6 will be diverted via Junction 45.
Emergency services are dealing with a collision on the M6 Southbound, near Junction 42 at Low Hurst.
At around 12pm the collision occurred between an HGV and a car.
No one is believed to have been seriously injured at this time, but Cumbria Police are advising motorists to avoid the area.
