Motorsport star Allan McNish has been unveiled as the new patron of a Dumfries charity.

The Dumfries-born ex-Formula One driver and triple Le Mans winner is taking up the role with brain injury charity Headway (Dumfries & Galloway) - the only specialist service available to people in the region living with an Acquired/Traumatic Brain Injury (ABI/TBI).

“I am proud to be a Patron of Headway (Dumfries and Galloway). I know personally the traumas of head injuries, and often the impact it has on the related families and Headway provides a much needed service to the local community in education, support and rehabilitation for those involved, with over 650 families having been supported by their Outreach service during difficult times.”

Headway (Dumfries & Galloway) is planning a road-awareness and outdoors head-injury themed campaign during 2016 to highlight the potential dangers of activities including cycling, horse-riding and climbing.

They say McNish is the ideal famous face to help publicise the scheme.

"We are all absolutely delighted that Allan has agreed to be our Patron for Headway here in D&G. As well as being born and bred in Dumfries, throughout his racing career, safety has always been and indeed continues to be, a key priority for Allan.

"Our Prevention and Safety campaign planned for 2016 will hopefully be greatly enhanced through Allan’s role as our official Patron across Dumfries & Galloway.”
