Road closure after spate of accidents

The A66, one of the north's main roads, has been closed because of "severe ice".

Police say the move follows a series of accidents on Christmas morning.

The road connects the North West with the North East, and has been closed in both directions between Bowes in County Durham and Cumbria.

Low overnight temperatures have left ice and black ice as driving hazzards across the north and police are urging motorists to slow down, and to drive with care.
