New Wigton market set to open

Plans are almost complete for the launch of Wigton market on Friday 11th March.

Allerdale Borough Council and Wigton Town Council have been working together to build on the monthly produce and craft markets which have been taking place over the past year.

The market will be held every Friday on the recently refurbished Corn Market Area in front of St Mary’s Church, in the Market Hall, with potential plans to extend into the southern end of Water Street car park.

Around 20 stallholders are expected for the first market day.

“It’s going to be great to see a bustling market back in Wigton again, and we’re really pleased to be able to support Allerdale Borough Council and Geraud Markets to get this initiative up and running.”

– Alison Dodd, Clerk, Wigton Town Council

“This council has made a commitment to investing in our town centres to ensure that they thrive and are interesting and welcoming places to be. Wigton has had a market charter since the 1200s and we’re very pleased to be able to launch this new market.

"We know markets are just one way of attracting people to a town and that they add to its atmosphere and appeal so I wish the traders at the new Wigton venture every success.”

– Nik Hardy, Allerdale Borough Council’s Head of Economic Growth
