A woman has died and two more have been critically injured in a head-on collision on the A591 near Ings yesterday.

The 81-year old lady from Staveley was driving a blue Honda Jazz when it met a silver Vauxhall Astra, driven by a 56-year old man form Bolton-le-Sands in Lancashire.

She was given CPR but died at the scene.

The driver of the Astra and his passenger, a 91-year old man also from Bolton-le-Sands, were air-lifted to the Royal Preston Hospital after being freed from their car by the fire service.

Both have sustained extensive injuries: the driver is in a serious but stable condition but the passenger is in a critical condition.

The road was closed for five hours as collision investigators tried to determine what had caused the crash. Cumbria Police is appealing for witnesses.
